An ion is an atom or molecule that has a net charge- either positive or negative. An anion is a negatively charged ion. Some people remember this by using the following mnemonic. Anion = A Negative IONA cation is a positively charged ion. Some people remember this because the “t” in the middle of the word “cation” looks like a positive sign. Cation = ca+ion
